Service overview

Municipal corporations, councils, and panchayats issue trade licenses under their state's municipal laws. The licence ties a specific trade (a restaurant, a kirana store, a clinic, a manufacturing unit) to a specific address, and operating without one invites penalties and, in some cities, closure notices. Requirements differ significantly between cities, so we always start from your municipality's current rules rather than a generic list.

The application asks for the premises details, the nature of the trade, owner identity, and often a sanitation or fire compliance paper depending on the activity. Food businesses additionally need an FSSAI registration, and some trades need pollution control consent before the municipality will issue the licence. Getting that order right is the main service value: applying in the wrong order wastes weeks.

Rapidfiling maps your trade to your municipality's requirements, prepares the forms and annexures, files, and follows up. Renewals are tracked too, since most licences lapse silently and reactivation is harder than renewal.

What support includes

  • Identification of the exact licence category for your trade and city
  • Preparation of the application forms and supporting annexures
  • Coordination of any prerequisite compliance, FSSAI, fire, or pollution consent
  • Filing, follow-up with the municipal office, and renewal reminders

What support does not include

  • Details of the trade and the floor area of the premises
  • Any existing registrations, GST, FSSAI, or the previous licence for renewal

How the process works

  1. 1. Enquire with your city and trade

Share the premises address and what you will trade through the form.

  2. 2. Licence mapping

We check your municipality's schedule of trades, the licence category, and any prerequisite approvals needed first.

  3. 3. Application pack

Forms, annexures, and premises documents are prepared and checked for consistency.

  4. 4. Filing and inspection

We file with the municipal office and coordinate any inspection the officer schedules.

  5. 5. Licence and renewal

The licence is handed over with its expiry date, and renewal reminders are scheduled so it never lapses.

Fees and timing

What influences the quote

  • Municipality fee schedules, which differ by city and trade
  • Whether prerequisite consents are needed first
  • Whether the premises passes inspection at the first visit

Government fees and professional fees are shown separately in every quote. GST treatment is confirmed in the quote. Rapidfiling does not publish fixed prices for this service; request a quote to receive the fee breakdown for your case.

Important limitations

  • The licence is premises-specific; a new address needs a fresh application
  • Municipal approval timelines and inspections are outside our control
  • Some trades are prohibited in residential zones regardless of paperwork

Frequently asked questions

Is a trade license the same as FSSAI registration?

No. The trade license comes from the municipality for operating the business; FSSAI registration comes from the food authority for the food activity itself. Food businesses usually need both.

What happens if I operate without one?

Municipalities can penalise and, in some cities, seal the premises. If you have received a notice, tell us during scoping, reactivation follows a different path than a fresh application.

Does a home-based business need a trade license?

It depends on the municipality and the trade. Many cities require one for any commercial activity, while others exempt very small home businesses. We check your city's current rules and tell you.

How often is it renewed?

Most licences renew annually; some cities issue multi-year licences. We record the expiry at handover and remind you ahead of each renewal window.
