Service overview
Startup India recognition is granted by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade to entities that meet the startup definition: a company, LLP, or partnership not older than ten years, with turnover under the notified ceiling, working towards innovation or improvement of products, processes, or services, and not formed by splitting an existing business. Recognition is a government decision made on the application you submit through the Startup India portal.
The application itself asks for more than basic details. The entity must briefly explain its problem, solution, innovation, and funding status, and must attach a short write-up and supporting material such as a pitch deck, website link, or patent references. Applications are frequently rejected for vague descriptions of innovation or for inconsistent details between the write-up and the entity's filings, the two things we fix before submitting.
Recognition does not by itself give tax exemption: the income tax exemption under section 80-IAC is a separate application, and 6-years-of-funding certifications have their own process. We keep those distinctions clear so you apply for the right benefit at the right time.
Who this service is for
- Private limited companies, LLPs, and partnerships under ten years old
- Product or technology startups applying for tenders or seed programmes
- Founders planning to claim income tax exemption under section 80-IAC
- Entities seeking self-certification benefits and easier winding-up routes
Scope of support
What support includes
- Eligibility review against the startup definition, including the ten-year and turnover tests
- Drafting of the innovation write-up the portal asks for
- Preparation of the supporting deck and document set
- Filing of the recognition application on the Startup India portal and responses to clarifications
What support does not include
- Income tax exemption under section 80-IAC, which is a separate application after recognition
- Funding, grants, or assured approvals, recognition carries no funding promise
- Incorporation of the entity itself, quoted separately if still needed
Requirements and documents
- Certificate of Incorporation or partnership registration details
- PAN of the entity and director/partner details
- A short description of the product, the problem it solves, and what is innovative about it
- Supporting material, pitch deck, website, video, or patent/pending IP references
How the process works
1. Enquire and check eligibility
Share the entity and product details through the form. We confirm the startup definition is met before drafting.
2. Write-up and deck
We draft the innovation write-up and assemble supporting material that is consistent with your filings.
3. Portal filing
The application is submitted on the Startup India portal with the entity's login, and we respond to any clarification sought.
4. Recognition certificate
Once approved, the recognition number and certificate are shared, with a note on which benefits apply immediately and which need separate applications.
Fees and timing
What influences the quote
- Stage of the entity, incorporated entities with clean filings move faster
- Whether supporting material needs to be prepared from scratch
- Whether 80-IAC or other follow-on applications are in scope
Government fees and professional fees are shown separately in every quote. GST treatment is confirmed in the quote. Rapidfiling does not publish fixed prices for this service; request a quote to receive the fee breakdown for your case.

Important limitations
- Recognition can be revoked if the entity later fails the startup definition
- DPIIT decides each application; a well-drafted one can still be rejected
- Tax benefits need separate statutory approvals, recognition alone does not exempt income
Frequently asked questions
Does DPIIT recognition exempt my income tax?
No. The section 80-IAC tax holiday is a separate application to the income tax department for recognised startups meeting its conditions. Recognition is the first step, not the exemption itself.
Can a proprietorship get Startup India recognition?
No. Only private limited companies, limited liability partnerships, and registered partnerships are eligible. A proprietorship would need to convert first.
Why do applications get rejected?
Mostly for generic innovation descriptions, mismatched details with MCA filings, or material that does not support the claims. We fix all three before submitting.
What benefits come with recognition?
Self-certification under certain labour and environment laws, access to the Fund of Funds and startup programmes, faster exit provisions, IPR fee rebates, and tender preferences, each under its own rules, which we summarise at handover.
